A woman spent three months and $800 transforming her "mundane" bedroom into a fairy wonderland - complete with a bed made from tree branches and a canopy of leaves and flowers.

Indira Viswanathan, 22, decided to transform her "outdated" bedroom in January 2023 after realizing it "needed a bit of love".

She spent three months turning her childhood bedroom into a "fairy oasis" - using tree branches and sticks she collected from a nearby forest.

Indira bought other items like desks, mirrors, a wardrobe and chairs from Facebook Marketplace and thrift shops - spending $800 in total.

Indira, a clothing business owner, from Newcastle, Australia, said: "I hadn't done anything to my room since I was a child.

"It is a safe space and I wanted it to be a place I loved to be in.

"I suddenly had this idea of turning my room into a little fairy oasis - I got lots of inspiration from Pinterest.

"I live right next to a big forest - I go for walks there all the time. I thought it looked so cute and I wanted that vibe in my room."

After falling out of love with her childhood bedroom, Indira got to work transforming it to make it a "dream come true".

Indira and her mom, Anja, 54, an artist, went for walks in the nearby forest to collect tree branches and sticks to make her bed.

She said: "Me and my mom would go on walks and collect sticks. I did a lot of research into stick beds and you can't get good ones unless you spend a lot of money.

"We knew we had to figure it out ourselves.

"Luckily, our family friend, Margue Sullivan, 62, is into woodwork and she would come over and help us plan how we would do it.

"The bed took us three and a half weeks on and off and we have bolts and string to hold the frame together.

"We were trying to figure out what to do with the mattress, in the end, we saw an advert for a cardboard bed and went with that."

From start to finish, the room took three months to complete with Indira buying the rest of her furniture like desks and a wardrobe from Facebook Marketplace and charity shops.

Indira said: "Everything in my room is second hand, I went to a lot of thrift stores.

"I wouldn't say my room is completely finished, there are some things I still want to add to it but the majority of the work is done.

"I bought some desks, which were around $200 a pop, a nice vintage chair that cost me $50 and a couple of mirrors that were $20 each.

"If I saw something I liked in a thrift store I would call my mum and get her opinion, she is very supportive of these things."

Indira said her bed is her "proudest" item in the room and that house guests are amazed by her bedroom

She said: "It definitely has a wow factor - when people come over my mom will go and show them my room.

"Everyone is so amazed - it is not your standard bedroom for sure.

"I am most proud of my bed, it is the staple thing in my room especially as I have made it myself - I am very proud.

"I also have some sticks hanging from the ceiling that I hang jumpers on and I have a garden arch with fake flowers and fairy lights."
