Weight loss alone is seldom enough to cure people of type 2 diabetes, a new study has revealed.

Only six percent of people who tried to tackle their diabetes by losing weight were still free of the condition eight years later.

But those who lost the most weight in the first year were most likely to still be diabetes-free in later years.

Two thirds of those who started off well, achieving remission through weight loss, had elevated blood glucose levels again by year three.

In clinical trials up to 27 percent had fought off diabetes by losing weight but the latest study was a 'real world' one with no clinical intervention.

Researchers from the Chinese University of Hong Kong looked at 37,326 people in Hong Kong who were newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes to see whether and low long they could control the disease through weight loss.

The study, published in the journal PLOS Medicine, concluded that few patients will achieve normal blood glucose levels through weight management alone, especially over the long-term.

Clinical trials were much more successful because participants got intensive lifestyle interventions, with support for dietary changes, physical exercise and mental health.

Early weight management helping to shed the pounds quickly increased the odds of the lifestyle changes sticking and the condition not returning.

Study author Professor Andrea Luk said: “Greater weight loss within the first year of diabetes diagnosis was associated with an increased likelihood of achieving diabetes remission.

"However, the incidence of diabetes remission was low with only six per cent of people achieving remission over eight years, and half of those with initial remission returned to hyperglycaemia within three years indicating poor sustainability of diabetes remission in real-world setting.”

"Our study provides evidence for policymakers to design and implement early weight management interventions and diabetes remission initiatives."
