Hilarious footage shows museum visitors being duped - by a fake Van Gogh.

The undercover stunt left the public at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam confused and shocked as they stopped to admire the new addition to the exhibit.

The daring switch was done without knowledge of the museum itself and saw the artwork hanging for around an hour.

The team managed to avoid security and hang up the replica of the famous Van Gogh self-portrait without interference and even captured a video of them doing so.

In the new version, Van Gogh is seen wearing a red cap with the slogan: "Make plant-based great again".

The painting was even accompanied with a duped plaque - and museum visitors can be seen stopping by to view the artwork and read more about it.

Andy Shovel, Co-founder of THIS™, the plant-based firm in Holland behind the stunt, said: “We got away with it, a fake Van Gogh in the Van Gogh Museum.

"It was up for almost an hour before being removed, so by our calculations, thousands of people saw our masterpiece.

"We wanted to have some fun to mark Week Without Meat and Dairy in our own style and spotted March is also Van Gogh’s birthday, so we reworked one of his iconic self-portraits, hopped on a plane to Amsterdam and the rest is on camera."
