This savvy woodpecker enjoys food on tap after finding bird seeds hidden inside a rusty faucet.

Wildlife photographer Tony Nellis, 24, was working in Cockermouth, Cumbria, when he
spotted birds flocking to a garden post.

The birds appeared to be in a flap over a disused tap which had clearly not worked for some time.

Tony set up a hide nearby and spent seven hours snapping several species investigating the water source.

When he investigated further he realized a kind-hearted bird lover had stuffed the inside of the tap with seeds to help them through the winter.

Over the course of last Monday (11/3), Tony photographed a woodpecker enjoying a free meal followed by a blue tit and coal tit.

Tony, from Newcastle, said: “I was in the Lakes doing some wildlife pictures when I noticed a tap getting lots of attention.

“Quite a few birds took it in turns to investigate it but it clearly hadn’t worked for ages but it didn’t put them off.

“I thought it made for a good spot so just sat and waited.

“Over the next few hours I saw a great spotted woodpecker, a blue tit and a coal tit.

“They all seemed very interested in the tap but sadly for them, it remained dry.

"When it was quiet I went over to the tap to work out what all the fuss was about and realized it was stuffed full of seeds.

"It was basically a very well disguised bird feeder. It was a pretty ingenious idea by someone and the birds clearly appreciated it."
