A well darned pair of Queen Victoria’s red stockings are set to fetch hundreds of dollars at auction.

The woolly underwear – with a small hole in - date back to the 1860s and were given to Royal photographer Alexander Lamont Henderson.

In 1884, Henderson obtained a Royal Warrant to capture everyday royal life and various items from the Queen’s closet were given to him.

The repaired legwear are expected to sell for between £400 and £500 ($526-$657) when they go under the hammer at Hansons Auctioneers on March 31.

Auctioneer Charles Hanson said: “We have uncovered various items of Queen Victoria clothing in the past including her bloomers but these red stockings are a first.

“It’s fascinating to think that underneath that ample black mourning gown, a little bit of color may well have been worn.”

In 2020, some of Henderson’s other Queen Victoria items including a skirt, bodice, stockings and leather boots sold for more than £17,000 after they had been kept in a wardrobe in a house in Norfolk for more than 100 years.

Most of the lots were snapped up by Historic Royal Palaces, a charity which looks after London’s Kensington Palace, Victoria’s place of birth.
