An 80-year-old diving helmet used by the US Navy has sold at auction for £8,000 ($10,069).

The vintage scuba gear, which was listed alongside a pair of diving boots, reached eight times its original estimate of around £1,000 ($1,258) when it went under the hammer.

The helmet was made in 1944 by the Diving Equipment and Salvage Company Inc., in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which had been established just seven years earlier.

It was originally presented as a gift to an employee who had assisted with the construction of one of their submarines.

The helmet was bought on Saturday, Feb. 10, at John Nicholson Auctioneers by a professional diver who fought off several other bidders for the prized antique.
