Stunning images show the last grasp of winter as 1ft-long ICICLES hang from the heather in a rare natural phenomenon.

Photographer Gavin Duthie, 63, captured the remarkable pictures while walking on the Cheviot Hills in Northumberland, England on March 10.

The huge icicles were formed by water trickling through over-hanging ‘peat hags’ on the north-facing summit of Cushat Law.

Peat hags form as a result of water eroding downwards into the peat or where a fire or overgrazing has exposed the surface resulting in an overhang of roots.

Gavin, from Morpeth, Northumberland, said: “I’d gone walking up Cushat Law to photograph the Cheviot in the background which had snow on the top.

“It was a wonderful spring day, the birds were singing and the weather was warming up but around one corner there was a peat hag with these huge icicles hanging from them.

“Peat hags are formed naturally through erosion and wind and because they were north-facing they were in shadow and the icicles hadn’t melted.

“It was like the last gasp of winter hanging on by its fingernails as the seasons changed in front of your eyes.”
