The world's largest cut diamond goes on sale February 3 - and could fetch over £5 million ($6.7 million).

The Enigma is 555.55 carat black diamond and larger than the Queen's own legendary 530.4 Cullinan diamond.

Called "a treasure from interstellar space" by auctioneers Sotheby's, the origins of the diamond are from outer space.

Stephen Haggerty, a professor of earth and environment at Florida International University, said that the 55-facet diamond is so rare it probably isn't from Earth.

The diamond was certified as the largest cut diamond in the world as of 2006.

On online auction as Sotheby's starts February 3 and bidding ends February 9th.

The Enigma has previously never been sold on the market and has been exhibited in Dubai, Los Angeles and London.

Rare black diamonds are one of the toughest forms of natural diamond, and can generally be found in rainforests like the Amazon.

Tobias Kormind, managing director of Europe's largest online jeweler 77 Diamonds, says demand for black diamonds is on the up.

He explained: "British TV personality and musician Myleene Klass chose a large, dramatic black diamond for her engagement ring last year.

"I expect to see a healthy flurry of bids for the Enigma from gem aficionados and investors.

"The Enigma is a diamond with unparalleled bragging rights. It's the ultimate party trick - just imagine revealing to your guests you are the owner of the world's largest cut diamond

"The size, shape and source of the Enigma diamond mean this auction is a groundbreaking and amazing event in diamond history.

"While many newly minted wealthy individuals currently have their sights set on the latest NFT fad, I believe heads could well be turned by this opportunity to invest in a very real, tangible, one-of-a-kind, extraordinary alternative asset."
